Abu Dhabi - 16th April 2013: Today’s World Jiu-Jitsu Children’s Cup Final, held under the Patronage of His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, served as the ultimate teaser for the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu – Jitsu Championship 2014 which starts on Thursday. The free to attend event will see competitors from across the world fighting in Abu Dhabi, which has cemented its status as a global capital for the sport.



Energetic youth took to the mat to showcase their hard-work, skills and talent in front of a full crowd at the newly opened First Gulf Bank Arena (FGB Arena) at Zayed Sports City. With the federation celebrating the sixth year of the World Professional Championship, the UAE’s youth showed the local crowds what they can expect over the next few days of world class competition, by winning 25 gold, 31 silver and 65 bronze medals.

Speaking after the close of the opening days of captivating action, Abdulmunam Al Hashemi, Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation and President of the Asian Jiu-Jitsu Federation said: “Today has been an incredible precursor to a competition that has become so well known in the Jiu – Jitsu community both here and abroad. The fights between this generation of Jiu-Jitsu fighters has been tremendous to watch and encouraging to all who have witnessed their intensity and courage in competing on this international level. With some spellbinding performances throughout the day both from the boys and the girls, I look forward to seeing these fighters evolve over the years and represent the nation throughout the world.”



One of the UAE’s greatest weeks of live sport and free fun will include: an expanded fan experience, an enhanced spectator programme that includes an opening ceremony on the 17th of April at 3.30 PM, sponsor activities, family events, interactive stands, daily prizes and a raffle draw where all visitors will have the chance to win two cars from Al Tayer Motors on the final day, including a Jaguar XF or a Land Rover LR2. Spectators will also have a chance to win a dream vacation courtesy of Etihad Holidays. The holiday package includes two return economy class tickets from Abu Dhabi to The Maldives and three nights’ accommodation at the Holiday Island Resort Maldives.

A new addition this year are the online competitions for best photo and best video using the official Championship hashtag #WPJJC with cash prizes of AED 30,000. The best Instagram video of the tournament that garners the most likes will be awarded AED 10,000. On Twitter there will be two lucky winners of AED 10,000 each for the best picture in the FGB Arena with the most retweets.
