Glover Teixeira makes case for light heavyweight title shot with win over Ryan Bader

BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil – Upcoming defense to Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165 aside, Glover Teixeira proved he might be the biggest threat to Jon Jones’ light heavyweight reign with his first round finish of Ryan Bader tonight in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

The well-rounded Brazilian weathered the storm of early takedowns and aggressive striking from the American wrestler to come back and finish him late in the first round. It all started with a vicious left-right combo from Teixeira that dropped Bader to the ground and it was elementary from there with the referee calling a stop to the bout at the 2:55 mark of the opening round.

When asked afterwards what his thoughts were about a potential title shot, Teixeira was very direct.

“I’m telling you, this belt is going to be mine,” Teixeira said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s Jon Jones [or] if it’s [Alexander] Gustafsson, it’s mine.”

For now in lieu of gold, Teixeira earned the Knockout of the Night bonus and an extra $50,000 at UFC Fight Night 28.

A Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt (one of the best in the world), Jacare showed he was more than his grappling chops from the get-go in this one – displaying some powerful punch with his right hand as Okami covered up. The Manaus, Brazil native had his opponent on his heels throughout the short bout and ended things at 2:47 of the opening round with one of those rights followed up by a plethora of shots from top position.

The win now puts Souza at an undefeated 2-0 in the UFC and 19-3 overall since coming in from Strikeforce earlier this year.

Benavidez would follow up quickly, punishing da Silva with a barrage of strikes forcing the referee to call a halt to the bout at the 3:07 mark of round one.
