Milwaukee, WI – Heading into UFC 164: Henderson vs. Pettis 2, it is safe to say most UFC fans expected another protracted battle from the former WEC stars. That wouldn’t have been a surprise considering Henderson last seven fights since last facing “Showtime.” All decisions including his epic wars with Frankie Edgar that earned him the coveted UFC belt. But as they say, all good things must come to an end and that includes Benson’s title run.
Fighting in front of his hometown (he grew up a mere few minutes from Milwaukee’s Bradley Center), highly motivated Anthony Pettis was able to keep things even on the feet early in the first, gaining ground while Henderson looked to mix things up with striking and taking him. Eventually Pettis would find himself grounded with the champion in his guard and he didn’t rest there either, expertly swinging his hips to attack an armbar that left Henderson with no choice but to submit verbally at 4:31 of the first round.
And so after several years and few missed chances due to injury, Anthony Pettis now finds himself crowned as the new UFC lightweight champion with a potential bout with featherweight kingpin Jose Aldo possibly lurking in the wings.
Interesting time ahead in the lighter weight classes indeed.
