Bellator 106 Results and Recap

By November 7, 2013December 29th, 2016MMA

“…the best and most successful Bellator card ever.”

That was the general consensus following the Bellator 106 card held at the Long Beach Convention Center on November 2, 2013.

Originally scheduled as a PPV event, the card was originally set to feature Tito Ortiz taking on Quinton “Rampage” Jackson in their dual debut with the company before Tito hurt his neck.

While that certainly changed things up a bit, fans ultimately saved $45 and got to watch some outstanding fights on FREE TV (Spike TV).

Not really a bad thing at all.

Recapping the main card, we start with the first fight featuring Marine Mike Richman taking on Akop Stepanyan. It was a well-fought scrap by both men and exciting for the crowd in attendance. Stepanyan actually had momentum on his side for most of the short fight but was stopped in his tracks by a vicious counter punch by Richman to win late in the first.

Next up for Bellator 106 results, Joe Riggs walks out of the LBC $100,000 richer and with a spot in the next season of Bellator’s welterweight tournament after taking out Texas native Mike Bronzoulis using a methodical and grinding wrestling-heavy attack.

Then came the title fights – three of them to be exact.

First up, Daniel Strauss took on defending champion Pat Curran, successfully beating him for the featherweight title using a strategy that mixed up the different levels of striking, takedowns, and grappling to give Pat his first loss in quite some time.

Speaking of losses, King Mo lost his second fight to Emanuel Newton who now holds the title of interim light heavyweight champion. Mo Lawal was dropped by Newton via spinning backfist at Bellator 90 and was supposed to gain retribution in this one but instead he was hit by a lot more spinning attacks en route to the decision loss.

Finally, the best fight of the night featured Eddie Alvarez and Michael Chandler in their own rematch following their first bout in 2011, a fight of the year effort.

This time they did it again with a rousing five round fight that saw the Philadelphia native Alvarez once again reclaim the title of Bellator lightweight champion. Fans can only hope for a rubber match between the two somewhere down the line but should go down as one of, if not the best fight of the year in 2013.
