TOM DEBLASS: LAW ENFORCEMENT WHO DON’T TRAIN ARE LYING TO THEMSELVES
“Law enforcement that doesn’t train, or even trains once a month are lying to themselves. Yes you have a gun, you have tasers, but hand to hand combat over 90% can’t last 60 seconds against a decent high school wrestler." - Tom DeBlass
Tom DeBlass believes law enforcement officers should train jiu jitsu, and we’re inclined to agree with him.
Policing the streets is a difficult task, and though officers can rely on firearms (in many countries), tasers and batons to help them along the way, there’s no denying that gaining proficiency in the grappling arts would give them an overriding advantage when on the job. There are countless horror show video clips floating around on the internet showcasing law enforcement ineptitude; multiple officers trying – and failing – to restrain people in what turns out to be a complete comedy show of incompetence.
In his refreshingly honest way, DeBlass recently too to Instagram:
“Law enforcement that doesn’t train, or even trains once a month are lying to themselves. Yes you have a gun, you have tasers, but hand to hand combat over 90% can’t last 60 seconds against a decent high school wrestler.
“I’m not talking shit, this is literally my observations of running my own academy for 13 years. I even had a cop at 280lbs of pure muscle train until he got 2 stripes on his white belt. The first day he trained live was the last day he trained. Getting man handled by a 160lb kid with glasses was too much. “However, if you aren’t trained then what do you expect? Put on the white belt and learn, no one is looking down upon you. In fact we are impressed when you train.”
