Brits-63

The sixth rendition of the British Open is coming up this weekend, representing one of the biggest events in the UK competition calendar and taking place at the Coventry SkyDome Arena for the very first time. The British Open has continued to grow and improve from year to year, and we fully expect the 2015 instalment to be the best yet. We caught up with event organiser, Braulio Estima, do discuss the growth of the tournament.

"I’m really looking forward to the weekend,” says Estima. “I believe the British Open has been one of the leading competitions helping to develop the level of BJJ in the UK, so I’m really happy that every year we’ve managed to improve and make the event better. We’ve come a long was in a short time and it’s easy to forget this is only going to be our sixth year – I think it will be our best yet.”

The Coventry SkyDome Arena seats 3,000 spectators, representing a fantastic venue for both competitors and fans. With the previous two championships taking place at BodyPower Expo, Estima and his team have invested heavily to secure a stand alone venue this year.

“Our partnership with BodyPower was a good step forward, and now this year to have the competition at the Coventry SkyDome is another big step in the right direction,” says Estima. "It’s a fantastic arena with plenty of seating and it will be great to have all the attention on just our jiu jitsu athletes. It is much more of a financial commitment for us as organisers, but it is something we really wanted to do to make sure we continue to build and make the event as professional as possible and enjoyable for the competitors. Managing everything ourselves also makes it much easier for us to make access for people really simple, and holding it outside of Birmingham meant people staying over for the weekend could do it cheaper. It’s going to be a great weekend and I look forward to seeing everyone there!"

The British Open takes place this coming weekend 16th – 17th of May. Registration closes on Wednesday 13th May, so make sure you register asap and avoid missing one of the biggest UK events of the year.
